Is it safe to drive with a chipped screen?
Windscreens are made of laminate glass which is two layers of glass held together by a polyvinyl butyral interlayer.
When the screen is chipped it is the outer layer of glass that is broken. The structural integrity of the screen is not usually compromised unless there is very heavy damage to the windscreen.
Windscreen chips can affect your vision
If a chip is in your line of sight, it can impair your view of the road ahead making hazards harder to spot.
And chips anywhere on the windscreen can be a distraction while you are driving.
A chip is a potential crack
A windscreen chip could turn into a crack at any time - often when you are least expecting it.
This could be distracting, especially if you happen to be driving at the time.
Did you know?
The UK MOT requires the windscreen to be repaired or replaced if there is damage on the screen.
